Current State of Nutrition Education in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Programs in the United States and Canada
Conclusions: Nutrition education was reported as highly underrepresented in pediatric critical care medicine fellowship curricula. The majority of programs rely on allied health care professionals to prescribe parenteral nutrition, which may influence trainee independence in the provision of nutritional therapies. Improving the format of current nutrition curriculums, by relying on more active teaching methods, may improve the delivery and efficacy of nutrition education. The impact of novel training interventions on improving the competency and safety of enteral and parenteral nutrition delivery in the PICU must be further examined.

Epidemiology of Pediatric Critical Care Transport in Northern Alberta and the Western Arctic
Conclusions: The current transport system has multiple priorities with regard to efficiency and quality. The medical services at referral hospitals may affect the likelihood of PICU admission and subsequent PICU length of stay; however, no negative impact was observed in other outcomes including mortality.

Research Collaboration in Pediatric Critical Care Randomized Controlled Trials: A Social Network Analysis of Coauthorship*
Conclusions: Pediatric critical care has made considerable progress in the number of trialists and randomized controlled trials, but the research enterprise remains highly clustered and fragmented, particularly geographically. Efforts to further increase the quantity and quality of research in the field should include steps to increase the level and range of collaboration.

Ability to Assent in Pediatric Critical Care Research: A Prospective Environmental Scan of Two Canadian PICUs
Conclusions: Very few patients were considered approachable for assent during the first 24 hours of PICU admission. Those who were considered appropriate to approach were less ill, spent less time in PICU, and were unlikely to be considered for enrollment in pediatric critical care research.

Beyond Survival: Pediatric Critical Care Interventional Trial Outcome Measure Preferences of Families and Healthcare Professionals*
Conclusions: In addition to survival, long-term quality of life/functional status and duration of organ dysfunction represent important interventional trial outcome measures for both families of critically ill children, as well as the multidisciplinary team who provides critical care.

SCCM Pod-487: The Intersection of Climate Change and Critical Care
According to the United Nations, climate change is the defining crisis of our time and is happening more quickly than anticipated. Can critical care professionals be the spark that lights the fire of change? Kyle B. Enfield, MD, FSHEA, FCCM, was joined by Srinivas Murthy, MD, MDCM, MHSc, at the 2023 Critical Care Congress to discuss the intersection of climate change and critical care. Dr. Murthy is a pediatric infectious diseases and intensive care physician at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver British Columbia, Canada. His academic and clinical interests are in emerging and severe infections, innovative cli...

SCCM Pod-96 PCCM: Acute Hyponatremia in Hospitalized Children
Desmond Bohn, MC, BCH, discusses his editorial, "The Problem of Acute Hyponatremia in Hospitalized Children: The Solution is the Solution," which was published in the November 2008 issue of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. The editorial was in response to an article by P. Alvarez-Montanana et al, published in the same issue titled, "The use of isotonic fluid as maintenance therapy prevents iatrogenic hyponatremia in pediatrics: A randomized, controlled open study." Dr. Bohn is Department of Critical Care Medicine Chief at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. (Pediatr Crit Care Med. 2008;9[6]:658) Released: 12/1/08

Associations Between Postoperative Management in the Critical Care Unit and Adolescent Developmental Outcomes Following Cardiac Surgery in Infancy: An Exploratory Study*
Conclusions: Several important developmental outcomes in adolescents were associated with factors related to their postoperative course in the PICU as infants. Findings may highlight those children at highest risk for neurodevelopmental sequelae and suggest new approaches to critical care management following open-heart surgery, with the aim of mitigating or preventing adverse long-term outcomes.

Toward Gender Equity in Critical Care Medicine: A Qualitative Study of Perceived Drivers, Implications, and Strategies*
Conclusions: Participants identified a gender gap in critical care medicine and provided important insight into the impact for personal, professional, and group dynamics. Recommended improvement strategies are feasible, map broadly onto reported drivers and implications, and are applicable to critical care medicine and more broadly throughout medical specialties.

Extracorporeal Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation in the Pediatric Cardiac Population: In Search of a Standard of Care*
Conclusions: The results of this survey identify wide variability in resuscitative practices during extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the pediatric cardiac population. The deviations from established Pediatric Advanced Life Support CPR guidelines support a call for further inquiry into the pharmacologic and logistical care surrounding extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Canadian Guidelines for Controlled Pediatric Donation After Circulatory Determination of Death—Summary Report*
Conclusions: This process showed that rigorous, transparent clinical practice guideline development is possible in the domain of pediatric deceased donation. Application of these recommendations will increase access to pediatric donation after circulatory determination of death across Canada and may serve as a model for future clinical practice guideline development in deceased donation.

Pediatric Transport Safety Collaborative: Adverse Events With Parental Presence During Pediatric Critical Care Transport
Conclusions This is the first study to compare the effect on adverse event rate and clinically relevant outcomes between transports with and without parental presence during interfacility pediatric critical care transport. Our study found no significant difference in the adverse event rate between transports with and without parental presence.

Clinical practice guidelines: management of severe bronchiolitis in infants under 12  months old admitted to a pediatric critical care unit
ConclusionThese guidelines cover the different aspects in the management of severe bronchiolitis in infants admitted to pediatric critical care units. Compared to the different ways to manage patients with severe bronchiolitis described in the literature, our original work proposes an overall less invasive approach in terms of monitoring and treatment.
